Advocacy alliance boosts children’s health

“Robert Benton made his decision in 2019: He would move from Minnesota to Cincinnati to take custody of his grandchildren.

Their mother had died in traffic crash in October 2017. Her boys, 10 and 12, were with her, and the older child had suffered head trauma, loss of one eye’s sight and hearing loss. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center rated his condition critical when the boy arrived. Now two years later, he still needed specialized medical care. Their aunt had cared for them at first but now, Benton, 58, was ready to take charge.

The question was, how? Child Help, the Cincinnati Child Health-Law Partnership between Cincinnati Children’s and the Legal Aid of Greater Cincinnati swooped in. “We helped him get guardianship and get benefits for the kids,” said Cynthia Cole, director of development and communications for the agency.”
