What is ALHS?

ALHS is the Asthma Learning Health System. Our mission is to establish a seamless integration of clinical care, research, and community-based supports to ensure that every child with asthma will have excellent health (fewer exacerbations) and optimal quality of life (fewer symptoms, more in-school days).

Vision

  • Develop a common operating picture dashboard that displays the information needed by clinicians, community partners, and patients/families to execute the tasks necessary to prevent asthma exacerbations.

  • Increase shared situational awareness and assess its effects on coordinated action.

  • Determine the effect of shared situational awareness on pediatric asthma care processes and outcomes at the county level.

How Does Air Pollution Affect Asthma and Health?

Small particles and gases in the air can pass through your nose or mouth and get into your lungs and blood. Both long-term and short-term exposure to air pollution can cause many health problems. At high levels, air pollution can be harmful to everyone. But even lower levels of air pollution can harm health.

The EPA reports air pollution levels using the Air Quality Index (AQI). AQI reports on ozone, particle pollution, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide.

When AQI levels are moderate (AQI 51-100), symptoms can worsen for people with asthma. Those with asthma should limit their time outdoors, especially from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Stay in a well-ventilated, preferably air-conditioned, building. Most of all, do not exercise or work hard outdoors when the AQI is at unhealthy levels.

Use the AQI gauge to monitor levels in real-time.
